What custom pixel-mapped LED actually means

A pixel-mapped assembly is built to the architecture rather than the catalogue: the length of the run, the radius of the curve, the pitch between pixels, how the control data reaches it, and how someone services it in year five.

We design, assemble and commission these assemblies ourselves. Components are sourced from established suppliers; the design, the assembly, the pixel mapping and the commissioning are ours. The mapping is written by the same team that designed the layout, so the pixel order in the software matches the pixel order in the room.

We work with architects, head contractors, venue operators and local government, either holding the lighting design ourselves or delivering somebody else's intent.

Built and running

Magnet House in Northbridge is home to Australia's first pixel kinetic ceiling, per our project release and the ALIA write-up: 54 floating triangles on 162 individually controlled motors, 240,000 addressable LED pixels and 34 square metres of LED display. Pixel-mapped stairs, bars, mirrors and channels follow the building's contours and are controlled as one instrument.

At Encore in Rockingham, two kilometres of custom pixel LED strip, designed by our own team and proven in pre-commissioning, trace the room around a fully 3D-mapped LED matrix. At the Aberdeen Hotel, lighting designed in January 2023 by our own designer took the main room and the side room together: pixel bars, LED strobes, RGBW washes, and the DJ booth, bar, entry, VIP booths and balcony bar each given their own RGB feature treatment.

The Mandurah Estuary Bridge is the same discipline at infrastructure scale, and not a strip installation: 523 high-performance LED lighting fixtures across both 380-metre spans, on a control architecture of more than 8,300 individual channels. We did not design those fixtures. We specified and detailed them, then worked directly with the manufacturer to add corrosion resistance beyond the standard product, because constant coastal salt spray, high winds and impact are not conditions a catalogue fixture is built for.

And then we keep it running

A custom assembly with nobody maintaining it becomes a liability the first time a section fails and the original drawings cannot be found. We hold the design files, the mapping and the commissioning data, which makes us the cheapest people to call when something needs attention years later.

Support agreements cover inspection, spares strategy and the seasonal work that keeps a feature installation looking deliberate rather than patchy.
