What keeps an immersive exhibit running?
An immersive exhibit is judged in its first thirty seconds, every session, every day. The picture is either seamless or it’s broken - visitors don’t grade on effort.

The install is the easy half
Inside the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle, the Dome Underwater Experience takes visitors beneath the surface without anyone getting wet: high-resolution projection and surround sound in an immersive dome, running session after session for school groups and grandparents alike. Technical Alliance installed it - and installation is the half of the job with a finish line. The other half doesn’t have one. The same system has to produce the same thirty seconds of wonder on a wet Tuesday in July, three years in, with a queue at the door.
The quiet disciplines
Museum environments reward the unglamorous things. Documentation that matches what is actually in the ceiling, not what was proposed three variations ago. Spares thinking - knowing which component fails first, and having it on the shelf before it does. Service access designed in from the start, so maintenance doesn’t mean scaffolding through a public gallery. And scheduled attention that lands before the school holidays, not during them. Downtime in a museum is measured in disappointed faces at the door, so the whole support model is built around not having any.
Specify the life, not just the launch
For government and cultural institutions, the procurement lesson is simple: a tender that only describes opening day has priced half the exhibit. A support arrangement with the team that installed the system - the people who hold the documentation and know the room - costs less than rediscovering it from scratch every time something blinks. Government and cultural venues sit at the heart of our register.
The dome was an install worth remembering - but the lesson is bigger than any one room: specify the life of the exhibit, and make sure someone owns it.
