Can one school hall really do five jobs?

Monday assembly. Wednesday exams. Friday concert. Saturday community hire. Somewhere in between, a drama class. The multipurpose school hall is asked to be five rooms in one build - and whether it manages depends entirely on decisions made before the slab was poured.

The flip has to be engineered

At Perth Modern School, one room flips between musicals, drama, orchestral performance and lectures because the mechanisms were designed in: rotating acoustic reflectors, a variable acoustic cloud, an orchestra lift. None of that can be added later. A hall that hopes to convert with furniture and goodwill converts to nothing well.

Modes, not menus

The operational version of the same idea: at Kelmscott Senior High School, the venue runs three modes - Assembly, that any teacher starts from one touchscreen; Rehearsal, which opens the desk; Performance, which locks the room to the bio box. Five jobs, one room, and nobody needs a technician on a Tuesday.

Do not forget the fifth job

Community and commercial hire is the job schools undervalue at design time and treasure afterwards - a venue specified properly, like Wesley College’s 1,800-seat centenary gymnasium with its show-court modes, earns its keep year-round.
